## Math Curriculum

## What students will learn

The Common Core 7th grade Math Standards consist of five areas:

**1. Ratios and Proportional Relationships**- Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve
**real-world**and mathematical problems.

**2. The Number System**- Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

**3. Expressions and Equations**- Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
- Solve
**real-life**and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

**4. Geometry**- Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.
- Solve
**real-life**and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.

**5. Statistics and Probability**- Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.
- Investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models.

## How Students will learn

At High Tech Middle Chula Vista we use projects as catalysts for learning. Math is no different. In this class students participate in a year long project that immerses them in authentic financial situations where they can apply math. This project is called the

**income**through their effort and work in class. Their income is subject to either a 1/4, 1/5 or 1/8 pay increase depending on whether they have a Masters, Bachelors or Associates degrees - Students attend Koteach University to earn degrees, but many need to take out a
**student loan at 3.76%** - Students have to calculate and pay
**taxes**based on income brackets from the IRS - Students analyze the tax implications a Roth Individual Retirement Account versus a Traditional Individual Retirement Account

While the Stewardship Project is robust in its depth of topics and areas of math, we will supplement this project with other activities and methods throughout the year that include, but not limited to:

- Learning angles and shapes through
**Computer Science, Coding and Robotics** - The Callie/Ko Casino where probability and student's real Stewardship Project money are both in play
- Illustrative Math Curriculum
- Group problems
- Khan Academy
- Number talks, class discussions
- Fluency practice
